Organization: It Boils Down to Good Habits

If you are discovering that organizational goals look good on paper but are much more difficult to execute, then you are not alone. You must be focused and work with intent as getting organized isn’t easy. As they say, it takes 21 days to create a habit, and I’m going to provide my top suggestions for creating healthy organizational habits for your papers.

Mail

I find that having a designated spot to store and open mail helps to keep the clutter to a minimum.  If you don’t have time to sort through the envelopes every day, then create a basket or box to keep it in until you have the time to devote to it.  Keeping a paper recycling container and shredder in the same spot where you will sort through the mail allows you to dispose of unnecessary documents immediately, keeping your piles to a minimum.

Bills

Have a “bill payday” each month. A day each month that all your bills will get paid, regardless of the due date. Have a designated spot where you keep and pay your bills on “bill payday.” A file box that you keep on your desk or a spot in your kitchen or den is a good idea to house the bills during the month. If you find you are having difficulty getting a hold on your debt, you may benefit from a daily money manager.

Files

You need to have a clear, easy to read filing system. All relevant documents need to have a home and a place to be until they are placed in that home. So make a file for “to be filed,” “bills to pay” and “action items.” Keep a standing file where it’s visible on your workstation, so they speak to you on a daily basis.

Taxes

Include a file for the current tax year and include receipts for donations. Make a copy of your property tax bill for this file. Any paperwork for the refinance or purchase of a house should have a copy in this file as well. When your tax papers start to trickle in at the beginning of the year, put all those papers in this file, too. This way, everything is in one location and ready for your accountant when the time comes.

Stress

Make a good habit for yourself by hiring someone to help you and don’t beat yourself up about it, if you find yourself being overly stressed out or you don’t like dealing with paperwork. To be organized is not everyone’s strong point, and thanks to personal organizers, like My Confidant, it doesn’t have to be.
